Student achievement in math
This year you will notice that most of the math assessments that come home will be divided into the categories (K-knowledge and understanding, A-application, T-thinking, C-communication). Here is a general description of each. Each of the four categories are weighted the same therefore your child's final grade is reflective of the four categories as well as in class participation and observation.
Knowledge and Understanding - showing an understanding of the basic facts (ex: answering a multiplication sentence or stating a pattern).
Application - taking the acquired knowledge and applying it in various, ad sometimes new ways and making connections between concepts (ex: knowing that 6+2=8 and then being able to answer 6+__=8).
Thinking - using your knowledge to solve problems and outline the steps to get to an appropriate answer (ex: solving word problem that involve using different strategies).
Communication - explaining your thinking, showing why things are or how you know something is true (ex: explaining the difference between a seven in the ones column and a seven in the tens column).
